The frequency and intensity of hiking
Our products are ranked according to three levels of practice. 1. Occasional use: 10 hikes per year of about a 3-4 hour duration, covering less than 10 km and less than 700 m in elevation gain. 2. Regular: 20 outings of a 4-6 hour duration, 10 to 20 km, 700 to 1,200 m in elevation gain 3. Intensive: more than 20 outings of more than a 6 hour duration, more than 20 km, 1,200 to 2,000 m of elevation gain.
What size should you choose?
We advise you to try on several sizes and styles of boots to find the one best suited to you. You can take a size above your usual one to prevent the toes from bumping into the toe box when going downhill, provided the foot is properly supported to avoid friction.
how to try on your boots?
1. Try on both boots, while standing up, with the socks worn for hiking. 2. Tighten the laces, distributing the tension evenly. 3. Check two aspects: - that your heel doesn’t lift up before the boot when walking on an incline - that your foot doesn’t slip; and also that your toes don’t hit the front on the downhill.
The technical nature of the Outdoor Contact sole
The increased grip and resistance of this high-performance sole are due to an exclusive rubber blend. The design of the sole is what strengthens the grip. Our laboratory tests evaluate the grip coefficient on various surfaces/conditions, while our field tests in the mountains confirm it.
What’s the difference between traction and grip?
Traction optimises propulsion, prevents the boot from slipping backwards and stabilises it. It depends on the number and shape of the boot crampons. Grip prevents the boot from slipping and skidding on smooth ground or in demanding conditions.
How to prolong the waterproofness?
We advise you to re-waterproof your boots twice a year, using a waterproofing product (available on our website/in Decathlon shops) for continued protection against water. You can use waterproof gaiters to prevent the infiltration of water from the top of the boot.
How to care for your boots
1. Leave your boots to air dry. 2. Remove dry mud with a stiff brush. 3. Clean stains with a brush and some warm water and leave to dry. 4. Use a re-waterproofing spray to restore water-repellency on the upper.
replace your insoles
The original insole in your boots is designed to accommodate most feet. A change of insole can offer: - Better support (preformed or reinforced soles) - More comfort (warmth and/or cushioning) - A longer boot lifespan.

Waterproofing test
We carry out tests in the laboratory. The boot is immersed in water to mid-height on a mechanical arm that flexes to simulate a certain number of steps. With this test we can determine the time and number of kilometres that the boot can walk while staying dry. Then we confirm these capacities out in the field and under the rain, with usage tests.
How are the frequency and intensity of occasional use for the MH100 MID WP hiking shoes calculated?
We have classified our products in terms of performance and features for 3 levels of Mountain Walking- occasional about 10 hikes per year of a duration of about 3 to 4 hours, covering less than 10km and less than 700m in elevation gain;- Regular about 20 outings per year. 4 to 6 hours, 10 to 20 km, 700 to 1,200m of elevation gain per outing;- Intensive more than 20 times a year. Over 6 hours, more than 20 km, 1,200 to 2,000 m incline per outing.,
What Outdoor Contact outsole is used for the MH100 MID WP hiking shoes?
New high-performance sole with our new exclusive rubber blend developed by our experts. More grippy, more durable. The sole is designed for better grip using 3D simulations and then laboratory tested to assess the coefficient of grip on different surfaces and conditions. Field tests in the mountains allow us to do the final validation with a panel of testers.,
How is the waterproofing of the MH100 MID WP hiking shoes tested?
In a laboratory, the shoe is immersed in water to mid-height on a mechanical arm that flexes to simulates a number of steps. With this test we can determine a time and number of km that the shoe can walk while staying dry. Then we confirm in the field and under the rain, that the shoe meets its promises.,
Extended waterproofing
To keep your feet dry, we advise you to use a waterproof gaiter or mini-gaiter to protect the top of your shoes and prevent water, pebbles and sand from getting in.We advise re-waterproofing your shoes twice a year using a re-waterproofing agent (search for â€کwaterproofing' on our Decathlon website) which will help you restore the original water-repellent qualities and help prevent stains on the outside.,
Which size should I select?
Some Decathlon stores have a test route.1. Try on both shoes, standing up, with the socks worn for hiking.2. Tighten the laces, taking care to correctly balance the tightening.3. Check two points- the heel does not come up before the shoe when you walk uphill.- the foot does not slide and the toes do not press against the front when going downhill.4. Try on several sizes and models.Break them in gradually to adapt them to your foot.,
How to prevent blisters
Blisters generally develop when the skin is weakened by friction. In order to prevent them from occurring, we recommend the following- Choose a shoe in your size.- Wear suitable socks- Tie and tighten your shoes properly.- Make sure you tighten or loosen your laces accordingly while wearing your shoes, especially before starting a climb or a descent.- Wear your shoes on a short trip for the first use.,
Which socks?
A waterproof shoe will be less breathable than a non-waterproof shoe. Mid-length socks like the MH500, MH520 and MH900 are therefore preferable for absorbing perspiration and reducing overheating.,
Optimise the capabilities of your shoes by replacing your insoles
The original insole in your shoes is designed to accommodate most feet. A change of insole can bring1. Improved support some soles are preformed or reinforced to better support the arch of the foot.2. More comfort the insoles can also provide heat and/or cushioning.3. Longer life restore the support and comfort of your shoes by replacing the insole each season.,
How should you look after your shoes?
For proper care of your hiking shoes, we recommend- Leaving them to air dry;- Remove dried mud with a relatively stiff brush;- For stains, clean with a brush and a little lukewarm water;- Leave to dry;- Spray a re-waterproofing spray to restore water repellency on the upper.
